Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue)

Calea Victoriei (Victory Avenue) is a major avenue in central Bucharest. Situated in Sector 1, and having a length of 2.7 kilometers (1.7 mi), it leads from Splaiul Independenței (which runs parallel to the Dâmbovița River) to the north and then northwest up to Victoriei Square, where Șoseaua Kiseleff continues north. Calea Victoriei was Bucharest’s showpiece street in the Interwar period.

Major buildings and monuments along the street include (from north to south): The Cantacuzino Palace, The Museum of Art Collections, Stirbey Palace, The Athenee Palace Hotel, The Romanian Athenaeum, The National Museum of Art of Romania (former Royal Palace), The Central Library of the University of Bucharest, The Kretzulescu Church, The Revolution Square, The Telephone Palace, The Odeon Theatre and others.

Victoriei Square

The Victory Square received its name in 1878, when the Kiseleff Road was cut. Initially, the square had an almost circular shape, edged by public buildings, the Antipa Museum, the Sturdza Palace, and the Building of the Public Officials Association, the last two no longer existing. During the interwar period, the Victoria Palace was added to the Square, right behind the Sturdza Palace.

Kiseleff Street

Arcul de Triumf (The Triumphal Arch) is a triumphal arch located on Kiseleff Street, designed by Petre Antonescu. It commemorates Romania’s victory in the First World War and the coronation of King Ferdinand and his wife Marie.
